On 12 August 2026, the EU’s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) generally became applicable.
The aim is to reduce packaging waste and create more circular packaging solutions across the EU. This means increased focus on material choices, recyclability, packaging minimisation and documentation.
What does this mean for you as a customer?
If you purchase packaging or packaging components from us at Accent, PPWR may lead to increased requirements for information such as:
- material and material composition,
- weight and amount of packaging material,
- recyclability,
- recycled content,
- labelling and sorting information,
- documentation showing compliance with relevant requirements.
Not all requirements apply at the same time. They will be introduced gradually over the coming years.
What are we doing at Accent?
We are working to identify which of our products are covered by PPWR and what information needs to be available to our customers.
This includes:
- collecting and structuring material data from our suppliers,
- monitoring upcoming detailed requirements,
- reviewing how packaging designs and material combinations may be affected,
- strengthening documentation for our packaging products.
A question to consider already in product development
PPWR means that compliance increasingly needs to be considered already when a packaging solution is being developed.
Together, we may therefore need to ask questions such as:
- Can the amount of material be reduced?
- Can the material combination be simplified?
- Is the packaging designed to be recyclable?
- Is the necessary material information and documentation available?
For us at Accent, PPWR is therefore not only about complying with new rules. It is also about helping our customers develop packaging solutions that work both today and in a more circular regulatory environment in the future.
